“L. L. Cool J” 1984 ( Prismacolors ). L.L. was just a young, brash teenage rapper during this time and still living under the shadow of RunDmc.
“Anita Baker” 1987 ( Prismacolors ). Once I graduated high school, I used this drawing on my business card for my art career which never really got off the ground. I'm just saying.
“Sammy 1980”. This is one of my earliest caricatures, done before I was aware that they were called caricatures.
“Eddie Smurphy” 1986 ( Prismacolors, Ink ). During these years, the Smurf cartoons were beginning to fade in popularity as comedian Eddie Murphy was starting to rise in stardom.
“Iron Mike” 1983 ( Prismacolors ). Heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson was still a teenager during these years, but was putting the boxing world on notice with his string of one round knockouts.
“Freddie Jackson” 1984 ( Prismacolors ). Crooner Freddie Jackson was one of the more popular R&B singers around during this time.
“Morris Day 1984” ( Prismacolors ). This was the lead singer of The Time who was produced by the artist known as Prince. Also, this is the first of two Morris Day caricatures.
“Janet” 1985 ( Prismacolors ). At this point, Janet Jackson just released her breakout album "Control", and I was still trying to learn the art of caricatures.
“Sade” 1985 ( Prismacolors ). Sade was difficult to capture back then because most images of her were rather dark and hazy.
“Vanessa Williams” 1984 (graphite). This is one of a few drawings I created of the first Black Miss America. I purposely rendered this as a finished piece and chose not to use any color.
“Morris Day 1987” ( Prismacolors ). This was an attempt in correcting some issues I had with my first caricature of Morris Day.
“Hair Model” 1996 ( Graphite ). This was a quick sketch of a magazine picture.
“Paula Abdul” 1987 ( Prismacolors ). Paula Abdul's first hit was called "Straight Up". So, I drew her in front of a giant arrow. Clever.
“Heavy D” 1988 ( Prismacolors ). Personally, Heavy D and the Boyz was one of my favorite old school hip-hop groups.
“Live Model” 1984 (Graphite, Prismacolors). Some of my favorite drawings came from working with live models. I wish I did more of them.
“Melba Moore” 1984 ( Prismacolors ). This was probably the most work I put into a drawing at the time. It's based on a magazine picture of Melba Moore during the time she was singing duets with Freddie Jackson.
